"A successful man is someone who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much, who has gained the respect of others and the love of children; who leaves the world better than he found it; who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty ; who always looked for the best in others and gave the best he had. "
- a variation of "Success" by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Iceland Adventure - Reykjanes Peninsula

On the first day we went outside of the city, I took a conservative approach to pick somewhere close.  Reykjanes Peninsula is just 45 minutes southwest of Reykjavik, a geothermal wonder with lava fields, cliffs, volcanic craters and hot springs.

Hafnaberg Cliff

According to my research, our first stop is a 45 minutes hike across lave fields to the ocean cliff.   What I didn't know was the wind was up to 18 meters per second, the lava fields are massive in the remoteness, and worst of all - no other car parked at the scene.  As excited and nervous as I could be, I stepped out with the determination to hike to the cliff no matter what.  Luckily, two other German tourists joined us.  Here we are, with two little boys, on the windy journey to the cliff!

It was really windy.  At one point, the wind blew me to the ground and I almost got hurt by falling onto a rock.  We had to make triple effort to walk steadily.  Slowly, I lost sight of my family.  I waited for them but it appeared to me that they might have given up the hike and turned around back to the car.  Of course, a stubborn person like me, I continued on the journey and caught up with the other two Germany tourists.

I was so excited when I finally reached the magnificent cliff formation.  The wind was getting worst as we were getting close to the ocean.  The wing brought up the strong waves and rolled to the cliffs.  All the sudden, I felt the power of the natural force. I had the fear that the wind may send me off the cliff in no time.  I crawled on the ground and hid behind a rock to take pictures of the cliff.

With uneasy feeling about my family, after a few shots of the cliffs, I didn't wait for the German tourists and head back to the parking lot by myself.  I was rushing back to check on them and also show them my accomplishment by the cliff.  Ten minutes into my hike, I realized there was no footprints on the path and the sun was not in exact the direction I remembered.  I am lost!  I turned around and my heart sunk even further, no sign of the two German tourists!  I am in the remote lava field, all by myself!!!

Below is a picture of my uninterrupted view of the lava fields.  No one was in the sight.  "I have to return back to my family safely", I told myself. It took me several seconds to recollect myself.  I turned around and followed the path back to the cliff.  From the cliff, I tried two other paths until I was certain on one of them.  By the time I got back to the parking lot, I was all sweaty in spite of the cold wind.  For sure, it was sweat from my adventure!

Bridge between Continents

Never in my life I could imagine how easy is to across Europe to America!  The 15-meter bridge is a symbol of the connection between the Europe and America.  The Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are drifting apart with the earth forces.  As a result, Iceland is getting bigger every year!

First time on Volcano

As we traveled further, on the roadside, there was a small volcano on the roadside.  Alvin was extremely excited and ran towards the top.  On the top, we even saw another smaller volcano.  On the way down, the wind was so strong we couldn't even move an inch!  We had to hide behind a big rock wait until the wind calmed down a bit.
